Exciting Gingerbread Craft and Activity for a Holiday Study

Christmas is coming fast!  I don’t know about you, but I have been busy getting ready for the winter holidays, shopping, baking, attending parties and trying to enjoy the crisp weather. Sometimes I wish I could just shut my brain off!  If you’re anything like me, you’re feeling a tad stressed and ready to relax! I’m here today with a Gingerbread Man Freebie that will hopefully make your teaching life a little easier.  Your students will enjoy it, it will be keep them entertained, and you hopefully will be able to hold back from pulling your hair out on those last few crazy days before break.  Without further ado, here is one of my FAVORITE holiday crafts…the Gingerbread Man!

Using the Gingerbread Craft

This sweet gingerbread craft pairs perfectly with any holiday activity you have! I know so many teachers and homeschool parents who love to use this activity with their gingerbread study. What’s a gingerbread study you might ask? It involves reading several different gingerbread stories and comparing them.

Usually the teacher will read 3 to 5 different stories and create an anchor chart to record different story elements. These might includes characters, setting, beginning, middle ending and key phrases. The kids like to se the variations in “Run, Run as fast as you can…”.  You can print out a picture of each book or display the hard copies you own. Some examples of these read alouds might include:

  • The Gingerbread Girl by Lisa Campbell Ernst
  • The Gingerbread Man by Jim Aylesworth
  • Gingerbread Man Loose in the School by Laura Murray

There are so many others that teachers love, but these are some great ones we have read!

Once the crafts are complete, they make adorable bulletin board displays. I have displayed them under a heading that says “While Visions of Sugarplums Danced in Their Heads…”. If you want to get creative you can use your students pictures on the gingerbread face. They’ll love seeing their own faces on the classroom walls and in the hallway!

Using the Gingerbread Craft

This FREE gingerbread craft is so simple to use! Just print the template onto colored cardstock. You can let students cut out the pieces or you can pre-cut them. It’s a great fine motor activity but may be difficult for little fingers who are still learning to cut.

Let students add the white (or whichever color you choose) frosting to the gingerbread’s arms, legs and face. Then, they can add the buttons, face and bow!

If you prefer, you can also print the pieces onto white paper for students to color by themselves. This is a great activity for them to complete during morning work. It’s the perfect activity for a study on the letter g as well! You can use it with preschoolers, kindergarteners or any grade you want!

I hope you enjoy this fun craft! I would love to see and hear how you use it with your little ones! Leave me a note in the comments below.
