Fun Winter Penguin Craft Activity for Little Ones

The winter months are my favorite time to do crafts with preschool and kindergarten students. It’s chilly outside, forcing kids to stay in the classroom just a little more than normal. I love doing this penguin craft with my kiddos to keep them entertained. It helps them practice their fine motor skills while cutting and pasting the craft together. This penguin craft comes complete with a template for you to use either with colored cardstock or as a fun 2 page coloring craft. I am going to share a few fun ways you can use this penguin craft this winter.

The Penguin Craft Activity is displayed with a male and female penguin. The female wears a purple bow on her head. The male has a blue bow tie on his neck. They are lying on lined paper and there is a purple pair of scissors and some crayons nearby.

Study on the Letter P

For younger students in preschool or kindergarten, this penguin craft is an adorable way to practice words that start with the letter P. The labeled templates make it easy to print or trace onto colored cardstock! Students can also color the templates themselves to make the penguins more personal. Using the step by step directions, students can cut the patterns out themselves or you can choose to cut them out for them. Once students have glued all the pieces down, the penguin craft makes the cutest classroom or hallway display. Students will love showing off their work and something that begins with the letter P. Look how adorable they are!

This female penguin craft has been colored black, white and orange by a student. There are purple scissors and crayons lying nearby.

All About Penguins Writing

In kindergarten, students usually do an “All About” or expository writing piece. If your students study penguins at any point, this is a great activity to wrap up the unit. The penguin can be placed above a writing piece outlining their favorite thing they learned about penguins. You can showcase their work by hanging it up in the hallway or on a bulletin board. The kids will love creating their own little penguin, displaying their craftivity for everyone to see and then sharing it with their families when they take it home.

You can see the penguin craft in action in this cute video below!

This male penguin craft has a blue bowtie and is lying on a wooden board with orange scissors and a blue and black crayon. The penguins arms are up in the air. There are also mini penguin, snowflake and polar bear erasers on display.

Winter Penguin Bulletin Board

If you’re looking to decorate your classroom, bulletin board or the hallway during January, these happy little penguins make a colorful display. You can complete the activity during a gloomy indoor recess day or finish it across the span of a week. Some teachers may find it beneficial to help students cut and paste during small group rotations. The penguins come with bows that can be placed on their neck or head as a hair bow or bow tie. I love watching where students choose to place the bows and how they each decorate them. There’s always someone that makes a rainbow or patterned bow. Some students even name their penguins and neatly write the made up name on the bow. Have fun with it!

The penguin crafts are hung up in the classroom on some blue and green bins. The penguins have their arms in the air. One penguin has a blue bowtie and the other has a purple bow on its head.

I’m not sure what it is, but my kids LOVE crafts this year. Maybe it’s this generation or the fact that we’ve had to stay indoors more, but they get very excited when it’s time for another cut and paste craft. I even use crafts as a reward or celebration for good behavior. The penguin craft would make for a great reward in your classroom this winter.

I hope you can use this easy prep penguin craft in your prek or kindergarten classroom!
