Ice Cream Name Craft: A Colorful Way to Practice Name Recognition

I Scream, You Scream… We all scream for Ice Cream! Since kids (and adults) love ice cream, it’s only fitting to have an ice cream craft that everyone will love. What makes it even better? Personalizing it with a name and putting a cherry on top! Oh, and it’s FREE in our Crafty Bee Creations Resource Library. I’m going to share some cute ways to use this craft and how you can get your hands on it.

The ice cream cone craft is displayed on blue paper and says the name Kaitlyn. The cone says, "I scream, you scream, Kaitlyn screams for ice cream!"

Materials Needed To Make This Craft

To make this ice cream craft, you’ll need the ice cream template and colored paper. You can print the template directly onto the colors of your choice or you can print them onto plain white paper for your kids to color. Some teachers and parents like to print the templates onto stiff cardstock and save them as templates to trace every time they want to complete the craft. Everyone has their own method!

This ice cream cone craft is colored in by a student. There are purple, yellow, red and green crayons lying around the craft and a pink pair of scissors. The craft is on a wooden board and some multicolored dotted paper.

I like to print the letter squares on different colored papers and then have students write one letter of their name on each square. Before gluing them on to their craft I have them mix them up and put them in order. This is a great exercise for working on how to spell their name!

My favorite way to showcase this craft is to glue the whole ice cream cone, complete with a cherry, on a piece of colored construction paper. It makes the ice cream cone pop and gives the display we put up a little more color! If you prefer, you can display the cones without a colored background too.

Ways to Use The Ice Cream Craft

The Ice Cream Craft has so many uses! Here are just a few ideas.

  • Celebrate the end of a fantastic year and the start of a summer vacation
  • Classroom reward at any point in the year
  • Back to school get to know you activity
  • Exciting bulletin board display for the beginning of the year
  • Practice fine motor skills
  • Name recognition at the start of a new year or in preschool

Students are given the square letter pieces to assemble their name. The squares are supposed to be the little sprinkles on your ice cream. They’ll have to put their name in order, making it a great name recognition activity.

We have used this craft for many of these options over the years and I know parents love keeping these little ice cream cones as keepsakes. They’re a great reminder of the special times kiddos have as they are growing up and learning to read and write their name.
