Old MacDonald Craft for Kids in Fall

We all know the fun nursery rhyme and kids love it! The song is so much better with a visual to sing along with. I created this interactive Old MacDonald Craft to help students learn the words to the song. It’s also great for fine motor skills, story telling and learning names of animals. Let me show you how we like to use this fun craft.

Assembling Old MacDonald’s Farm

To prepare this craft, all you have to do is print the templates onto colored cardstock. I like to print the barn on traditional red paper, but you can choose any color you’d like. Make sure you print out the animals as well. The animals can be printed in color on white cardstock or regular printer paper. From there, students just have to cut out the pieces and glue them together.

This download also comes with labeled templates that can be xeroxed if you prefer that method of material prep. If you want the kids to do all of the coloring, there is also a coloring page template that students can complete. This option is a one page coloring sheet of the barn and a separate page with the animals.

How to Use the Craft

This craft is the perfect activity to give during back to school and fall months. We always learn about the farm in the cooler months. The craft can be assembled while singing or listening to Old MacDonald. Students choose which animals they want glued down behind the barn doors. Once they are complete, they make cute bulletin board displays.

They also make fun and interactive story telling props. The kids enjoy singing the song or telling Old MacDonald’s story while pointing to the animals. Kids that need extra visuals love this craft because it gives them something to look at and hold while they sing the song.

The craft is a wonderful way to learn about letters of the alphabet, too. You can teach kids about the letter O for Old, M for MacDonald and F for farm. Since almost every child knows the song, it’s an easy activity to implement any time of year.

Ideas for Younger Kids

This is a great activity for preschoolers or toddlers who are working on their animal names and sounds. We create the barn and I cut out the animals. Then, I set the animals in front of the kids. As we sing the song, they grab the correct animal and we think of the sound it makes. Once we have figured out the name of the animal and its sound, we place it in the barn and continue our song. The kids love it!

If you are a teacher, you can laminate the pieces and use them in your reading or literacy centers. Try putting velcro on the barn and the back of the animals so you don’t lose pieces. Students will enjoy retelling the story with song in their free time.

I hope you enjoy using this craft with your little ones! I would love to hear how you have used it in the classroom or at home.
