Favorite Thankful Read Alouds

You can pair this fun Thankful Turkey craft with a book about being thankful. You can read one a day to spread them out across the month. Here are some of our favorites!

  • Thankful by Eileen Spinelli
  • Being Thankful by Mercer Mayer
  • Splat Says Thank You by Rob Scotton
  • The Thankful Book by Todd Parr
  • Those Shoes by Maribeth Boelts
  • The Thank You Book by Mo Willems

These are just SOME of our favorites and not all of them are Thanksgiving themed, but they illustrate the idea behind being thankful so well!

Students can get creative with what they are thankful for, whether it be family or a favorite toy.

Completing the Turkey Craft

To complete this Thankful Turkey Craft, you’ll need the step by step instructions provided in the download, the templates, scissors and glue. The templates can be printed onto colorful cardstock. I like to print out a bunch of the feathers on multiple pieces of paper and let the kids pick their own colors. You can encourage them to select multiple colors for a brighter and more colorful turkey if you’d like. I prefer the turkey with a rainbow of colors.

If you’d rather, students can color their turkey crafts instead of printing them onto colored paper.

If you want, you can also print the templates onto thick cardstock to be traced onto colored paper. Then, you can reuse the tracing templates year after year.

Before assembling the turkey, have your students write their name on the primary lines on the turkey’s body. Then, have them write something they are thankful for on each of the colored feathers. If the students are having trouble writing, you can always write their words for them.

Once they have finished writing, glue the turkey’s feet and their feathers onto the body. Don’t forget the eyes, beak and wattle. The kids will love seeing their completed turkey crafts hanging up around the room.

Students will love displaying these crafts and then taking them home to share with their families on Thanksgiving day!
