Personalized and Colorful Winter Name Hat Craft for Little Ones

How cold is it where you live? I’ve always loved a good snow. Watching the bright snowflakes fall is so peaceful. You can’t help but smile when it snows. Of course, when it snows, you have to bundle up with your winter gear to stay warm. When it’s too cold to go outside, you can opt for a fun Winter Name Hat Craft Activity instead. Kids enjoy customizing these crafts with their names.

Use the Name Hat Craft to Practice Name Recognition and Spelling

Students who are working on recognizing and spelling their names will love practicing using this colorful name hat craft. You can prep the materials by printing the templates onto colored cardstock. Then, write the letters you need for each student’s name onto the little squares. Cut the pieces out or let students work on their fine motor skills by cutting them out on their own.

Once everything is cut out, the kids can assemble their crafts on their own or by following your instructions. There are step-by-step instructions for completing the name hat craft so no one gets lost. The kids can put the letters of their names in order before gluing them onto the craft.

Instead of gluing them down immediately, you can have the kids scramble the letters of their name several times and then put them in order. You can also have them point to and name each letter and the sound they make in words. If you are a teacher, this is a great activity to do at a small group table before completing the craft.

I like to print the squares for the letters onto multiple colors because I’m a fan of rainbows, but you can choose any color scheme you want.

Read a Winter Hat Story Before Completing the Name Hat Craft

Books are the perfect way to tie activities together. When they cold weather hits, pull out a good book and talk about the weather and what’s appropriate to wear outside. You may have several of your own favorites to read before doing the craft. If not, you can read The Hat by Jan Brett! She is the writer of The Mitten and her stories and illustrations are always captivating. If you don’t have access to the book, you can play the video below for your kids.

When a hedgehog wears a stocking as a hat, the other animals think it’s ridiculous, but the hedgehog is quite proud. This is a fun story to use when talking about how to keep warm in winter, and it has a silly ending your kids will love! Once you have finished the story, let the kids make their own adorable winter name hat craft.

Turn the Craft Into a Coloring Page

The Winter Name Hat Craft can also be printed using the coloring page template. Students can then color their hats any way they want. You can write the letters of their name as I mentioned above, or you can let students write their own letters. This is a great activity for students who already know how to spell their names but are practicing writing. I recommend choosing a dark crayon or marker to write the letters with, in case students want to color their squares too.
