I don’t know about you, but we LOVE Tacky the Penguin! The original story is hilarious and all of the sequels to it are just as amazing. If you aren’t familiar with Tacky, I highly recommend you take a look at some of the fun books in the collection. There are many titles that can relate to all sorts of social stories and experiences your kids may be going through.
Who is Tacky the Penguin?
Tacky the Penguin is a fun-loving penguin who isn’t like the other penguins. The other penguins dress properly, greet one another the same way, move harmoniously and eat the same things. Tacky on the other hand, is much different. He wears a brightly colored shirt, eats his fish on sliced bread, walks to the beat of his own drum, and greets his friends more abruptly than they’d like.
One day, some scary hunters come to take the penguins away to get rich. All of the penguins hide in fear. The hunters were hoping to find penguins who could sing beautifully. Tacky shows them his ways by marching in a strange pattern and singing his loud song. The other penguins catch on and join in with a dreadful tune, scaring the hunters away. From that day forward, the penguins are grateful for Tacky’s presence and no longer gave him the side-eye when he does his own thing.
Tacky the Penguin Craft
The Tacky the Penguin Craft is simple to prep and fun to put together. All you have to do as the adult is print the templates onto colored cardstock. Either an adult or the children can cut the pieces out. If you have the time, you can prep some for the students to practice cutting on but have extra pre-cut pieces ready to go if they make mistakes.
Once the pieces are ready, the kids can put them together to make their very own Tacky the Penguin!
You can also print the coloring page template provided so students can color their own penguin. This gives them the opportunity to color the tourist shirt any way they want.
The completed crafts make a fun and colorful bulletin board display for any time of year. You can use them to celebrate the winter, fun read alouds, or the letters T (for Tacky) and P (for Penguin).
