What is Cinco de Mayo?

Cinco de Mayo is a Spanish holiday celebrated on the 5th of May. It commemorates Mexico’s victory over the French Empire in 1862. This occurred during the Battle of Puebla. People celebrate with beautiful music and song, amazing traditional dishes, and of course pinatas. You may see many cactuses embodying the celebration because of its origins in Mexico.

Putting the Cactus Craft Together

To create this craft you will need the templates for the cactus and sombrero. The Cinco de Mayo Cactus Craft templates are easy to download and print. The template for the sombrero is a fantastic way to practice fine motor skills because of the zig-zags and easy-to-navigate curves.

Print the templates onto colorful cardstock and cut them out. If you have younger kids, it may be easier to pre-cut the pieces and just let them piece it all together.

Once you have all of your pieces, attach the cactus arms using a glue stick or liquid glue. Put the stripes of the sombrero onto the hat. Then glue the hat on top of the cactus’s head. Don’t forget the sweet eyes and smile!

If you aren’t able to print the templates onto colored cardstock, use the coloring page template to make a coloring activity for the kids. There is far less cutting and pasting and kids will enjoy decoring their cactuses on their own.

Pair the craft with an engaging writing activity about what the kids learned about Cinco de Mayo! They can write about their favorite dishes, things they learned, things they want to know, and much more.

Use the craft to learn about the desert and landscape of Mexico and even California. While the celebrations started in Mexico because of their victory in the battle, the traditions have spread to other areas of the world, including the United States.

Fun Books for Kids About Cinco de Mayo

Want some fun books to read with your kids that center around Cinco de Mayo? Here are a few I would recommend! Some tell the history of Cinco de Mayo and why people celebrate. Others are cute stories that will make kids laugh.

  • Chicks and Salsa by Aaron Reynolds – A fun story about Chickens making a traditional Mexican dish.
  • Cinco de Mayo by Mary Dodson Wode – An informative book about the history of Cinco de Mayo.
  • Mouse-O! by Judy Cox – A cute story about a cat and mouse on Cinco de Mayo.
  • Marco’s Cinco de Mayo by Lisa Bullard – A young boy’s adventures on Cinco de Mayo.

Read one of these sweet stories and then complete the fun cactus craft in the week leading up to Cinco de Mayo or on the day of.
