An Easy & Fun Watermelon Craft: Practice Your Name, Counting, and More!

Did you know that August 3rd is National Watermelon Day? We will definitely be enjoying a watermelon or two that week. What better way to celebrate than to make a watermelon craft!? If you are like me and you like your crafts to be versatile for the kids, this craft is for you. There are multiple options to use while making this craft, allowing you to differentiate for your kids or students. This craft comes with the option to add a child’s name or silly eyes. It also allows the kids to put colored pieces together or to color the templates themselves. Pretty cool! Keep reading to see how you can use this Watermelon Craft Activity with your little ones.

Counting Seeds on the Watermelon Craft

One of the ways your kids will enjoy using this craft is by placing seeds on the watermelon and counting them. Either give them a number to glue down or let them count as they add as many as they would like. The layers of the watermelon are easy to glue down and you can print as many seeds as you wish.

Make a math game out of it by telling the kids a story problem and letting them solve it using the seeds. You might tell them, “I had 2 watermelon seeds and then I got 3 more. How many seeds do I have now?” The kids will have to lay down the seeds as you talk to solve the simple math equation! It’s an easy way to practice addition (or subtraction) at home or in the classroom.

Color Your Own Watermelon Craft

Kids love coloring, so print off these simple templates and let the kids color them any way they want. I like to show them my completed craft so they can copy it if they want to or let their imaginations run wild. Who’s to say watermelons can’t be purple with yellow rinds?

This option lets you print the template onto colored cardstock or color it yourself. There are also silly eyes to add at the end. Sometimes, instead of the template eyes, we use giant googly eyes to make it even sillier! As you can see, sometimes we place them ON the watermelon and other times we set them slightly above.

Write Your Name on a Watermelon Activity

This version of the craft is my favorite because the kids get to customize their watermelon. Write the letters of their names on the watermelon seeds using a thick marker. I usually use a Sharpie marker so the colors don’t bleed.

Scramble the letters up and give them to each child. Let them put the letters of their name in order on the table before gluing them down. I recommend using a glue stick so the marker don’t seep through the paper when using liquid glue.

These make a great back-to-school activity or something fun for the start of summer. The crafts always make a super cute bulletin board display as well.

How Do I Make My Watermelon Craft?

Making the watermelon craft activity is simple! Just download and print the step by step directions to follow along. Layer the green paper, then the white paper, then the red paper on top of one another. Then, add your seeds (with or without letters) and the eyes and mouth if you choose.

There truly isn’t any right or wrong way to do it. I love a craft that has a little personality, so let your kids get a bit creative.
