How To Use a Patriotic Writing Craft for President’s Day

The year 2020 was full of big events, including the election of a new President, Joe Biden. President’s Day is an important part of history that you may want to include in your lesson plans this year. Keeping kids excited and engaged when discussing historical events can sometimes be difficult. I have created a fun and colorful President’s Day writing craft to help. I’m excited to share it with you!

President's Day Craft can be used during the month of February.

What’s Included in The President’s Day Craft?

This activity comes with everything you need to have a successful conversation with your kids about the election and what they would do if they were President of the United States.

The following items are included in the download:

  • A photograph of the craft activity
  • Step-by-step directions
  • Templates that can be copied directly onto colored cardstock or construction paper and then cut out by students.
  • Labeled templates that can be xeroxed onto cardstock, cut by the teacher, and then traced onto colored paper and cut by students. Labels will include the name of the pattern, the color to use, and how many of each pattern to cut (Ex: Body Cut 1 Red).

When Can I Use This President’s Day Craft?

This writing activity can be used any time of year but is a great supplemental activity during an election year. Many classrooms discuss Presidents and elections on February 15th, President’s Day. You can implement this activity either during morning work or independent writing time. There are multiple writing prompt options to choose from:

  • When I become president…
  • Election Day
  • If I were president…
  • If I were President of the United States…
  • President ___________

Each of these prompts comes in primary or single lined writing template options. It’s incredibly amusing to hear what the kids have to say for each of these prompts. I especially love hearing what they would do if they became the President. They always come up with some greatly childish ideas, but they also surprise me with some extremely insightful thoughts!

How To Use This President’s Day Activity In The Classroom

The President’s Day writing activity has endless uses. One way to use this craftivity, is to study the letter E or P and display it in your classroom or in the hallway. This is also a fantastic fine motor skills activity to help students practice cutting, pasting and writing. I love working in small groups or one on one with this activity so I can really help kiddos on the skills they need assistance with. Next, this is a fantastic activity to incorporate as a reward or classroom party for any students that love crafting!

Finally, this President’s Day writing craft is perfect to pair with other worksheets or a read aloud. I love reading Duck for President by Doreen Cronin. It’s a hilarious story for little learners and is a great tool to tie the whole lesson together. You could also read the story, If I Ran For President by Catherine Stier. This story is all about what a little boy named Ben would do if he were President. These stories give students an idea of how they could make the world a better place.
