2D Shape Animal Crafts and An Owl FREEBIE!

Shapes are everywhere! When learning about 2D shapes, you can point them out in almost everything we see. There are squares on the windows, rectangles on the door, circles on clocks and so much more. You can make learning about shapes even more fun by letting students get creative with animal shape crafts. Give them different colored shapes to make adorable animals. I have two bundles and even a freebie to share with you!

 

Any chance I get, I’m working crafts into my daily routines. I love the atmosphere during a good craft and the kids love seeing their finished products. For a while, shape crafts were boring and you could only build a house or a building. I found a way to create adorable crafts using 2D shapes. They look a little silly, but these shape animal crafts are just too much fun!

 

You can create multiple crafts with this Shape Animal Crafts Bundle. The kids can create a mouse, a butterfly, a cat, a dog and an owl! Kids use a variety of shapes to create these cute animals. There are rectangles, triangles, ovals, circles, and squares. I provide step by step directions to complete the crafts, so there’s hardly any planning for you. You can either print the shapes on different colored paper to make a primary color craft or you can print on plain paper and the kids can color their animals to their own design.

 

Kids can get creative with their placement of some of these shapes and you can choose from tons of different colors depending on how you want the craft to look. You can even talk about different colors. While describing how to complete the crafts you can dictate by pointing out the yellow wings or the green head. Using the colors can help students learn their shapes and colors all at once. The crafts are extremely simple for kids of all ages to complete.

 

How Does This Relate to Math?

After putting the craft together, we discuss how many of each shape we used. For the dog craft, we would say, “I used five rectangles, four little and one big. I used one circle for the face, two ovals for the ears and a triangle for the nose. I also used circles for the eyes!” Kids love looking at their creations and naming the 2D shapes used.

 

You can also let students talk about the attributes of the shapes. These 2D Shape Animal Crafts allow for great discussions about what different shapes look like. Kids can say, “The rectangles have two short sides and two long sides. The circle has no corners and the triangle has three corners and three straight edges.” The kids love talking about all of the attributes of 2D shapes.
