Imagine you are with friends and family on a warm summer’s evening. You’re sitting around a beautiful campfire, chatting about life. The kids are patiently awaiting the sun to go down so they can make ooey gooey s’mores by the fireside. Ahhh! Relaxing, right? I like to create this ambiance with a s’mores craft for the kids. I have used it many different ways each summer. It’s perfect for all ages including preschool, kindergarten, first and beyond.
S’mores EOY Celebration
At the end of the school year, we usually do themed days or weeks to celebrate a wonderful year. One of our themes is a camping day or a camping week. We pitch little tents in the room, read books with the lights off and flashlights on and we enjoy a yummy s’mores snack. We read tons of camping stories and read alouds about the summer months we are about to enjoy. To top it off, we make our own s’mores craft!
We talk about the ingredients needed to make a s’more. Then, we list them all out and sometimes write a “how to” piece to go with our s’mores man. Last, we write the steps to make a s’more. They go more or less like this…
- Get your ingredients (chocolate, graham crackers, marshmallow, skewers)
- Lay a piece of chocolate on the graham crackers
- Put the marshmallow on the skewer and hold it over the flame until gooey
- Place the marshmallow on the graham crackers and close it up. Enjoy!
The kids can either cut and paste the parts of the craft already printed on colored cardstock, or they can color the s’mores friend by themselves. Either way, we love some good fine motor practice.
S’mores Themed Classroom
Every teacher likes to dress up their classroom with some type of theme. Some teachers choose apples, others choose rainbows, dinosaurs, colors or even camping! The s’mores craft is a great addition to a camping themed classroom. The kids can each create their own craft to be hung in the hallway or on a giant bulletin board. They will make the classroom super cozy and inviting.
S’mores Craft Reward
If your kids enjoy creating cute crafts as part of their rewards, this craft is perfect to add to your files. I use a chart where students have to collect tally marks for good behavior as a class. Once we reach a certain number, usually about 20, we have a celebration. The kids like helping me keep track of the tallies we have and how many more we need. Their behavior is amazing as we get closer to our goal and our reward.
If you’re extra nice, you can even let the kids taste their own s’more too! Kids love a tasty treat.
How to Complete and Use This Craft
The s’mores craft is simple to create. All of my crafts come with step by step instructions to put the pieces together. You can print the craft on colored construction paper. This makes the craft easy to cut out and assemble when you are crunched for time. Additionally, this craft comes with a template that students can color all by themselves. I love letting the kids color their crafts because it makes for more variety on the bulletin board. It shows the personality of the classroom.
Overall, we like to do crafts as a whole group but they’re also fantastic to use during small group times. You can pair it with a summertime story and work with kids to practice their fine motor skills. Crafts always make for a quiet, peaceful time in the classroom. It’s a great time to do a read-aloud while the kids are working.
Camping and S’mores Bundle
This s’mores craft is also part of a camping themed unit. Students can complete the following crafts: bear, tackle box, flashlight, fishing kid, forest ranger, trailer, tent, backpack, canteen, evergreen tree, hotdog, fire pit, camping van, sleeping bag, lantern, compass and of course the s’more. You can have each kid complete a different craft to make one huge bulletin board display!
Enjoy making this s’mores man craft to celebrate yet another beautiful summer!
