Hilarious Santa in the Chimney Craft and Writing Activity

Help! Santa is stuck in the chimney! How in the world will we get him out! We love using this hilarious Santa in the Chimney Craft and Writing Activity to do some creative writing. The kids get to brainstorm ways they can rescue santa and the final craft makes a silly bulletin board display afterwards. This craft and writing activity is great for preschool and beyond!

How to Use the Craft

I recommend beginning this activity with a read aloud. This gives students an idea of how Santa got stuck in the first place. Besides, I love pairing activities with books any chance I get. When Santa Got Stuck Up The Chimney is a great story to get you started. The story is extremely silly and the kids always love it. You can pause halfway through to let students brainstorm ways to get Santa out as a class before ending the story.

Read a story or two, brainstorm ideas together and then let students begin their writing. They can recall ideas from the whole group discussion or come up with their own. Some ideas I’ve heard include:

  • Tug on Santa’s boots
  • Use the reindeer to pull him out with their harness
  • Use butter to make the chimney slippery
  • Attach a bunch of helium balloons to his ankles
  • Blow pepper up the chimney to make him sneeze his way out
  • Call the military to pull him out with their helicopter

There are several different writing prompts to choose from, all available on primary or single lines.

  • HELP! Santa is Stuck in the Chimney!
  • If Santa were stuck in the chimney, I would…
  • How to Save Christmas
  • If Santa were stuck in the chimney, I would…

Assembling the Craft

After completing the writing activity, students can cut and paste their Santa craft. The templates are easy to prep and cut out for fine motor practice. You can print the templates directly onto colored cardstock or print them onto white paper to create tracers. There is also a coloring page option. I like using the coloring page with my kids because it gives them additional fine motor practice.

The kids will assemble the chimney, complete with bricks and snow. Next up, students attach Santa’s legs and feet to the chimney top! The writing page goes right on the front of the chimney bricks!

You can see it all in action by watching this short Assembly Video.

Creative writing is my favorite. I love letting the kids use their critical thinking skills and creativity to complete projects like this. They’re great for fine motor skills, fun and they create lasting memories.
