Come December, I really enjoy teaching the kids about holidays that are celebrated around the world. They are always fascinated by the differences in our traditions and those of others. Simply talking about the holidays never seemed like enough, so I put together these cute and interactive notebooks to help the kids visualize the Christmas traditions. You will love learning about these Christmas traditions and those that your students celebrate at home.
Which Countries Does the Christmas Around the World Unit Cover?
This giant Christmas Around the World Interactive Notebook is complete with crafts, activities and worksheets for 16 different countries. The notebook touches on Christmas holiday traditions in Africa, Australia, Brazil, Canada, England, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, Russia, Spain, Sweden, and the USA.
This resource comes with a Christmas Around the World Travel Suitcase template that students can collect all of their crafts in. The kids will love the included passport where they can collect all of their stamps. You can pretend to take off on a plane each time to travel to a new country. The kids will love the pretend aspect of boarding a plane, checking their bags, taking their seats, flying and landing! What a fun and engaging way to learn!
What Do The Kids Do For Each Country?
Once in each country, students will get their stamp in their passport and complete two worksheets. The worksheets allow students to write what they are bringing home as their souveneir (the craft), list food traditions, record Christmas traditions, and write how that country says “Merry Christmas” and “Santa Claus”. Use the additional KWL charts, primary and single lined writing pages and postcards for additional learning experiences. Add these activities to the notebook, the suitcase or keep them separate. The KWL charts make great displays around the room.
The colorful crafts are the final piece to each countries traditions! Print the step by step instructions for each craft, then students cut, paste and glue the pieces of the craft together. Print the craft onto colored cardstock for easy assembly or onto white paper for students to color. Each craft embodies the countries Christmas traditions. In Mexico they create a pointsettia, in Sweden a Tomten, and in Germany an adventskranz. The kids will love learning the new vocabulary and traditions.
How To Use The Interactive Notebook
My favorite way to use this notebook is in December while learning about different holidays. You can have the kids learn about one country a day or spread them out over a few days. This just depends on your timeline, needs and how many countries you want to cover.
Print and prep the notebook in a variety of different ways. If you have a binding machine, you can run the papers through to add spirals. Staple the pages together or hand the worksheets out individually. There is no wrong way to complete this activity.
My favorite way to assemble this notebook is to paste the worksheets and activities into a 70 page spiral bound notebook. This option is easy because there’s no prep besides adding a cover page!
