Reasons to Use a Hat Craft

Hat crafts are a fun activity to add to classroom lessons. They serve more purposes than you may realize. Here are just a few reasons that hat crafts are great!

Classroom Crafts Build Social Skills: Students will likely converse while creating their crafts. They might ask one another for help if they struggle with a piece. Their communication skills will be at play, and creating something together will give them a sense of community.

They Build Fine Motor Skills: Working with their fingers, students will build small muscles that will help with future writing. They will have to cut and glue the craft pieces on their own.

The Craft Works on their Critical Thinking Skills: Unless you give them explicit directions, students must work through the steps to make their hats. They will look at your model and copy what they see, which gets their brains working!

Crafts Foster Creativity and Self-Expression: Even though students will complete the same activity, all of their hats will look the same. If you allow them to color the pieces, you will end up with a rainbow of hats!

Creating a Craft Builds Mindfulness: Students will complete a calming activity while working on their sun hat craft. This can be a form of meditation or relaxation for kids. It’s a little bit of downtime in the otherwise chaotic day!

When to Use the Sun Hat Craft

The sun always reminds me of summer! The sun is shining, the world is warm and bright, and there is so much potential outside. It’s the perfect time to create a sun craft and excite kids for warm weather.

  • Use the craft during the back-to-school season to warm up to the classroom.
  • Add the craft to your morning work tubs during spring and summer each year.
  • Put the craft in your lesson plans at the end of the year to celebrate an amazing school year.
  • Pair the craft with a cute song like “Mr. Golden Sun”, or “Rain, Rain, Go Away.”
  • To wrap up a lesson, read a book about sunshine, spring, or summer and complete the craft.
  • Use the craft to talk about the letter S and everything that starts with that letter.
