How to Make a Flying Kite Craftivity That’s Bright and Colorful

Let’s go fly a kite! Kids love to be outside in this type of weather, and it’s the perfect time to fly a kite. I’ll be honest, I’ve always struggled to get a kite airborne, but it’s fun to try. Instead of struggling to get a kite up into the wind, have your kids create their own paper kite craft. This flying kite craftivity is a fantastic way to celebrate spring, warmer weather, and fun times outside.

Why Complete This Craft?

This flying kite craftivity is a great way to work on fine motor skills and to practice writing. It comes with a fun writing template to get kids thinking about what they would do if they were a kite.

Think about it! If you were a kite high up in the clouds, what might you do? Kids will enjoy coming up with all sorts of ideas as they “soar” through the sky.

This craft is also great for a study on wind or kites. As kids learn about how wind moves and changes, you can introduce kites and this fun craft at the end of the unit.

How to Assemble the Kite Craft

This flying kite craftivity is super easy to assemble. You can probably figure out the steps simply by looking at the pictures, but just in case, here’s what you need to do.

1. First, print your templates out. I like to print on colorful cardstock or construction paper, but you can also print on plain paper and trace the templates onto colored paper.
2. Cut out the templates.
3. Glue the triangles of the kite onto the larger diamond.
4. Then, add a flower in the center.
5. Glue the diamond onto the string and add your little ribbons.

Writing Portion of the Craft

Have your kids write about what they would do if they were a kite. Would they fly over the ocean and look at the pretty blue waves? Maybe they would fly to their favorite theme park and soar alongside the roller coasters. You will love hearing what the kids come up with.
